The April Topic: Carbon Capture – Options and Opportunities
The UK government is pumping significant funds into the development of carbon capture and storage technology.
The technology is controversial. While few can argue with the merits of CCS as a ‘retrofit’ technology for exising power stations, some are concerned that developing the technology will mean endorsing the roll out of new coal fired power stations.
From an economic perspective, this technology requires a price on carbon. In the absence of a high carbon price – or a carbon tax – sources of funding for CCS are an issue.
Meanwhile, alternative carbon capture technologies are being developed. Geo-engineering solutions are being assessed by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers which has compiled a report into options including artificial trees, algae-coated buildings and reflective buildings.
And companies such as Lotus Engineering are working on ‘carbon capture and reuse’ systems, involving the use of methanol as a component in the mix with ethanol and petrol in flexfuel vehicles.
Panelists will include Dr Tim Fox, lead author for the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ report on geo-engineering.
